Healing Neuropathy with Acupuncture: A Patient’s Story
What Is Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord become damaged. This can cause numbness, tingling, burning sensations, or weakness. This often starts in the feet and sometimes moving up the legs. While it can result from diabetes, injury, or medication side effects, many cases are idiopathic, meaning there’s no clear medical cause.
Neuropathy can make walking difficult, disturb sleep, and impact balance or confidence when moving.
A 65-Year-Old Woman’s Story of Hope and Healing
Recently at my acupuncture clinic in Tucson, I met a 65 year old woman visiting from out of state who had been living with neuropathy for more than two and a half years. The numbness and tingling began around the middle of her calves and radiated down to the bottoms of her feet.
She had tried nearly everything including physical therapy, massage, and various medications without success. Her doctors couldn’t find the cause and told her it was idiopathic neuropathy. It had affected her ability to walk safely, and she often felt unsteady on her feet. Nighttime was the worst, as the tingling kept her awake as well.
She came to see me through a referral from one of my long time patients who had experienced good results with acupuncture. Although she was nervous about trying acupuncture for the first time, she was open and hopeful.
Assessment and Orthopedic Testing
Before beginning treatment, I performed several orthopedic and neurological tests to evaluate nerve and muscle function, including:
- Reflex and sensory testing to measure nerve response and sensitivity.
- Tinel’s sign at the ankle and fibular head to check for nerve irritation.
- Muscle strength and balance assessments to understand how neuropathy was affecting her gait and posture.
These confirmed mild weakness in the lower legs and decreased sensation consistent with neuropathy.
Acupuncture Treatment Plan
Her treatment plan combined traditional acupuncture methods with modern techniques for nerve stimulation and muscle release:
- Traditional acupuncture points along the Spleen, Stomach, and Kidney meridians to support nerve repair, improve blood flow, and strengthen the legs.
- Dry needling to release tight calf, foot, and hip muscles that can restrict circulation and compress nerves.
- Electrical stimulation (electroacupuncture) between points on the lower legs and feet to promote nerve signaling and reduce tingling sensations. This strengthens the treatment overall.
During her first session, gentle electrical current was applied for about 20 minutes. Most patients describe it as a mild pulsing or tapping sensation. It’s comfortable and often very relaxing.
How Did We Do?
After her first acupuncture treatment, she noticed about a 70% reduction in tingling and numbness. Her feet felt warmer and more stable when walking.
By her second treatment a few days later, she estimated about 90% improvement. The nighttime tingling had mostly disappeared, and she was walking with more confidence. I was very happy with these results. Acupuncture continues to amaze me after all these years with it’s ability to treat difficult conditions.
Since she was traveling home after her visit to Tucson, I connected her with an acupuncturist in her home state so she could continue care. She left feeling thrilled and said she wished she had tried acupuncture years earlier. Acupuncture for the win!
Homework
To support her progress, I recommended simple home exercises and self-care strategies that help improve circulation and nerve sensitivity until she could begin acupuncture treatment back home:
- Ankle circles and calf stretches to increase lower leg blood flow.
- Toe scrunches and towel grabs to strengthen intrinsic foot muscles.
- Massage ball rolling under the feet for 2–3 minutes daily.
- Contrast foot baths (alternating warm and cool water) to stimulate nerve response.
